Vmware esxi.
Thursday, September 10th, 2009I decided to add some new hardware to the TwistedNut data center. I did not need new hardware, but Dell was nearly giving away Poweredge T105 machines. I picked one up for a bit over 3 bills with dual core AMD cpu and 4 gig of memory. I had an old Poweredge that I am retiring now. The old one was a Celeron with 1 gig of memory. The old Poweredge was very very loud. The new one I do not even know is running. That is very cool. I decided I would use Vmware ESXi on the new machine. The problem is you cannot install ESXi on the sata disks in the machine. What you need to do is install ESXi onto a usb pen drive. Boot off of the ESXi cd/dvd, then install to a USB drive that shows up in the list of drives. Then change the machine to boot from the usb drive and bingo. The mother board has a usb slot right on it, so I opened the case and plopped it in. I built a Ubuntu box and a Windows 2008 box on it last night. Everything is working as expected. Not sure what I will do next since I mostly wanted to check out ESXi, and now thats done and done.
